Practical Herbalism from the Renaissance: A Voyage with Culpeper
with Francis Bonaldo, LAc & Matthew Wood, MS
Who still hears Nicholas Culpeper's voice?
Nicholas Culpeper was the 17th-century rebel herbalist who dared to write a 'complete herbal' in plain English to empower the 'common people.
He also fought against the king in his free time... but let's stick to herbalism. His writings represent the primal source of the English language herbal tradition.
This class is an exploration of the medical terminology of the time, along with valuable herbal remedies with Francis Bonaldo, LAc & Matthew Wood, MS.
We let the language come alive in our imagination, visualizing the scenery of the times. This is truly rich material, coming from a 'pre-molecular' worldview of the universe and our place in it.
This is not a course on astrological herbalism. Rather, it is the first step in the door, reacquainting ourselves with the language of the time, with practical and creative uses of the remedies in our day. Open to anyone interested in the history of English language herbalism.
Who is this for?
All can benefit from the herbal and traditional medical insights given here! Practitioners and students of all levels can benefit. We discuss cases and applications of the material suitable for all levels of herbal practice. Culpeper left his masterpiece for anyone willing to peer into it with an inquisitive mind.
About our “roots” as English speaking herbalists. (Ha! Even if it's taught by a French speaking herbalist!) Nicholas Culpeper is the rebel who broke herbalism away from the doctors and made it into a separate discipline.
The value of pre-modern medical terminology and insights—which have been proven in the clinic of a contemporary herbalist.
Great remedies from the primal source book of English language herbalism, Culpeper’s Herbal (1652). The only book other than the Bible that has never been out of print since 1652. Clinically proven indications, including pulse, tongue, and reliable symptoms.

There must be a second part.If we consider that diseases are due to an excess of one of the 4 humors, phlegm, sanguine, choleric or melancholic, then we can treat with plants in antipathy to the cause of the disease. For example, for a cold, give warm and dry plants, for inflammation, cold and moist plants. Thank you Francis and Matthew!
